I had a gas anesthetic lecture today so I will pass along the comparison as
it was given to me. The two drugs are similar in most all respects with a high
vapor pressure, low blood gas solubility, very fast 1-2 minute recovery to
consciousness, and very minimal cardiac depression. Sevo induction is a little
faster and possibly easier but it causes a little more respiratory depression.
Iso is more likely to have the side effects of salivation and tachycardia.
Both are metabolized primarily by exhalation which reduces effects on liver
and kidneys. The biggest difference and the deciding factor for most clinics is
cost, sevoflurane being more than $120/bottle and isoflurane being often
under $20/bottle.
