Hi, everyone,

I am posting this not to be critical of either the
ferret owner or the vet where there was a severe
reaction after both the rabies and distemper shots
were given, but rather I am posting this so others
learn from what happened.

Our vet always separates these two shots by two weeks.
There are three reasons: first, chances are the
ferret reacted to one shot or the other, not both. In
the case of distemper there are at least two different
vaccinations that can be used in ferrets. I have one
little girl that reacted to the Merial Purevax vaccine
but not to the older vaccination (I forget who makes
it at the moment), so in the future she'll get the
older vaccination. The second reason is that if a
ferret reacts to both the results could be more
severe. Finally, our vet told us of some research
that showed that the vaccines were more effective if
separated in this way.

FWIW, our vet gave both at once until about six years
ago.

All the best,
Caity and the super seven
