It depends on the severity of the reaction. We've had
two anaphylactic reactions in our business, both to
rabies shots.

In Podo's case it happened when he was eight years
old. He collapsed, turned bright red, got very
swollen, and had difficulty breathing all within
seconds of being vaccinated. He got vaccinations,
IVs, and was put in an oxygen tent. He was touch and
go for a while.

In Nyssa's case she was two years old. She had
vomiting/diarrhea almost immediately and collapsed a
minute or so later and was non-responsive. While she
definitely had an anaphylactic reaction and was in
shock her condition wasn't as severe as Podo's. She
was treated with dexamethasone and I believe she did
get IV fluids as well. We took her home about six
hours later once she was stable.

We still vaccinate Nyssa (see my previous post on
pretreatment to prevent the reaction) but we elected
not to ever vaccinate Podo again considering his age
and other health problems.

Not necessarily. Podo's heart never stopped, though
our vet was certainly afraid that it might.

It's possible, but it may also be a temporary
condition. Podo was pretty out of it for a couple of
days after that vaccination but he did recover.

You may want to try limited, supervised interaction to
see if he's OK with the others now. If not then, of
course, you'll separate them immediately, but it may
work out just fine.

Oh, and I can't imagine anyone flaming you over this.
I rather think we're all hoping your little guy will
recover.

All the best,
Caity and the super seven
