Subject: Damage to canine tooth

Somehow, my ferret Spring chipped the tip of her right
front canine. I noticed this on March 9, and I see
her canine tips several times a day, so I would have
noticed if it happened earlier.
Last night, March 10, I saw that there is a distinct
dark band in the middle of her canine, and the whole
tooth is a discolored yellow.
I assume that she has broken the root, and that she
will have to have a root canal or extraction very
soon, right? Should I take her straight to the dental
specialist, or should we go to the regular vet first?
If the root is broken, I am tending to think a root
canal would be better than an extraction -- my first
ferret, Tasha, had an extraction of that tooth, and
her bottom canine always hurt her upper lip after
that.
Thanks for any advice!
Melissa
