Subject: question about Pred dosages

Ok, maybe this time the post will go through....

I was discussing pred dosage with my vet because my
insulinomic ferret was no longer responding to his old dose (2.2mg
BID) and diazoxide didn't seem to be helping either.
I had searched the FHL archives and seen posts regarding the
successful use of up to 10mg per day. Some of these posts were
from pet owners, but it seems that many of the professionals on
this list feel that going as high as that dose is worth trying, and,
given ferrets' tolerance of pred's side effects, it's relatively safe.

So, I told my vet. And yes, she is Very experienced with ferrets.
She told me that any dose above 2 mgs/kg BID is basically
pointless because at that dose, the body is taking as much as it can
utilize and any more is superfluous. She feels that more than
2mgs/kg is, I guess oversaturation. ( to clarify, no she
wasn't the one who had upped my ferret's dose to 2.2mgs).

I'm really troubled by this because it's not at all what the folks on
this list have been saying. I even looked in Mosby's guide to Rx
Drugs and couldn't find any discussion of this idea of maxxing out
the dose.

Thoughts from the listees? (regarding *either* prednisone or
prednisolone)

Thanks,

Skyla
