Has your vet mentioned the possibility of using Pediapred
instead of the prednisolone? Pediapred comes in a liquid
form in a variety of flavors, and the ferrets I've had who
needed it thought it was quite tasty in the default fruity
flavor.

I agree with what others have said about the possibility of
this indicating a blockage--even if he doesn't chew on
things, it could be a hairball. That might also explain why
he doesn't eat much hard kibble.
