Hello

I have been searching through the archives, where there is TONS of great in=
formation about lupron vs. surgery. But what I could not find is informati=
on about having lurpon shots AFTER surgery. And if I missed it and I am as=
king a repeated question...sorry

I have a now approx 6 yr old female that had been diagnosed with adrenal Oc=
t 02 and started on lupron. She had adrenal surgery Feb 03. The left glan=
d was completely removed, right grand seemed healthy at that time. She als=
o had a node removed from her pancreas (test results benign) and was diagno=
sed with IBD, which she was already suspect to have from a serve case of EC=
E.

She recovered great from the surgery. The vet kept her on lupron shots aft=
er the surgery. I could see maybe for a few months until her system readjus=
ted from the loss of the gland, but what about now? The vets reasoning i=
s that once a ferret has had adrenal problems, it will more then likely hav=
e problems again. From what I have read, I would tend to agree. But who kno=
ws when. Could be months =96 or years or on rare occasions, not at all.

So what would the benefit of being kept on lupron be? Lupron to me is by n=
o means a cure and more like a treatment when surgery is not possible. =

So if a ferret has had the surgery, recovered but been kept on lupron. Won=
=92t that be like masking the symptoms if the adrenal disease was reoccurri=
ng.. Or maybe prolonging the symptoms from showing when surgrey could be do=
ne? =

I was wondering what the =93general=94 over all opinion was. How are adrena=
l ferrets being treated after surgery. =

If a ferret was receiving shot before the surgery, are the stopped after su=
rgery or kept up?
Have there been ferrets that once diagnosed adrenal, had surgery right away=
and that was it, they have never had a lurpon shot. Or has anyone started=
the shots after surgery as a preventative type measure for reoccurrence?

My reason behind all the questions is that she does not take the lupron sho=
ts very well at all and never has. Money to continue that shots is not an =
issue. And if it is truly the =93best=94 way to go and to her benefit, the=
n the shots will continue. But I HATE having her stressed out every month.=
And the vet does be believe in the effectiveness of the 4 month time relea=
se shot. =

So I am wondering what the harm would be if I stopped the shots.
If she starts showing any signs of being adrenal again, it would be surgery=
right away. But is she does not, she would be a heck of a lot better off =
w/o the shot stress.

Thank-you in advance for any advise or input, it is most welcome
Take care, and cuddle your fuzzies
