Scamper is a 3 1/2yr old female, spayed ferret. We have had her since Augu=
st last year and until 3 weeks ago, everything was fine. Suddenly, her rig=
ht eye looked a little watery, her stools became loose and she just slept f=
or 23 1/2 hours a day. The vet said he could feel an enlarged spleen and t=
o cut a long story short it was removed a couple of days later. The vet ra=
ng me from theatre to let me know that things had not gone as well as they =
should. He said things had been very messy and her lymph nodes were the si=
ze of half a thunb. It was touch and go for 24 hours as Scamper haemorrhag=
ed quite badly. When we collected her the following day, the vet said that=
she had been full of liquid and he showed me a sample of this. It was whi=
te but opaque. I asked what it was and they were assuming it had something=
to do with the lymph nodes. For at least a week after the operation she w=
as oozing fluid that looked like dilute blood from the wound site. Since b=
eing put onto preds this has now stopped. It is now two weeks from the ope=
ration and the histology results have not yet been received. She shows int=
erest in things for about 1/2 hour per day but since the operation will not=
touch ferret biscuits or water anymore. I have to give her dilute Whiskas=
milk, cooked chicken or cat food in gravy. Her eye appears to be more wat=
ery than ever and although I'm taking her to the vets again tomorrow for a =
check up, I'm scared to death. Does anyone else have experience of these t=
hings in ferrets? Any response would be so much appreciated.
