I have recently gotten some info about a gland specialist in KC -- thanks
Melissa! -- about this, but I though I would go ahead and attach a
picture. Carter really needs help. A few months ago, we noticed a hard
mass near his rectum. (He is the typical early neutered/de-scented.) He's
5 1/2 and we've never encountered this with him before. The vet did
surgery and the pathology came back as a benign cyst with anal gland
remnant tissue. He healed up nicely. Then about a month after the
surgery, he swelled up horribly where the gland had been. The vet dx
cellulitis and prescribed clavamox, which did basically nothing. She went
in again and removed more tissue. We don't have the path report from this
back yet, but I'm betting it will be the same thing, along with some
inflammation and infection.

This was over a month ago, and now again we have the same story. He healed
up just as nicely and cleanly from the second surgery as he had from the
first, no infection present at all, but then much later, several weeks
after his sutures had been removed and we thought all was fine, he suddenly
swelled up again with this huge, red, painful lump. Again he is on
clavamox, which is doing, again, nothing.

The picture is of my poor baby boy's swollen rear end. KC is three hours
away, but we will make the trip if need be. However, I thought perhaps
some of the vets on list could take a look and give me some insight...? Do
we put him through a third surgery? Will a stronger or different
antibiotic be effective?

He had also recently taken to eating cloth (I think I posted about that
here...?), which I originally thought was a sign of boredom but now I'm
thinking may be a stress response. Of course, this just makes matters
worse, so he now has no access to cloth. He also gets plently of petromalt.

Help! He is still eating and (believe it or not) pooping normally, still
active, but his poor rear *hurts* him. He won't let us get near it and he
drags it a lot on the floor and carpet, which I'm sure just irritates it
more. I'm really worried about him.
