Hello Gail,

My vet and I are at the very beginning of testing. The ADV test is due bac=
k tomorrow, but the vet is pretty sure it's ADV. He also said that he hasn=
't seen a case of it in 12 years, so in his "realm" of thinking it's not as=
prevalent as the ferret folks (rescues, owners, etc.) say it is. All I kn=
ow is that if I can have (get) it, anyone can. And as I go over the places=
and other ferrets mine have come in contact with, it becomes a little like=
picking a needle out of a haystack. And not knowing which of my five ferr=
ets (three died the last quarter of 03) actually infected us (or if it was =
a visiting ferret while ferret-sitting), I'm a little overwhelmed. =

Specifically what test determines whether or not this ferret is a shedder? =
Can non-shedders become shedders at a certain point (like when they become=
really ill)? I have one more ferret at home, who, knock wood, is very hea=
lthy right now (and is probably all-in-all the healthiest ferret I've ever =
owned). She's five and a half and has never been sick. =

Of course I'm going over all the recent deaths -- I've never had so many, s=
o close together....and I've had ferrets since 1985. Most were unique situ=
ations (one had TB!!!and lymphoma, one died three days after a teeth cleani=
ng and we still don't really know why, and one died from a total organ shut=
down -- she was almost nine and VERY old. Her blood work didn't show any p=
roblems with protein so ADV was never considered). I've asked the vet to l=
ook back through the tests for these ferrets just to see if anything pops o=
ut at him. =

I'm having a hard time accepting that I can't have any more ferrets. It's =
like a death sentence for me too. =

If you could post the test (steps) in their entirety, that would be great. =
I'll find out from the vet today specifically what ADV test he's ordered. =
My head is swimming from the sudden influx of information.

Thanks,

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

What it boils down to is if your ferret is actively shedding or just a carr=
ier. What tests did you do? also, did you have urine, stool and blood sa=
mples tested to see if you have a shedder? Are your other ferrets tested? =
From your previous post, it didn't sound like you had done a specific test=
.=

Gail
