Subject: sugar in Clavamox?

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anyone knows, particularly any of the vets, does Clavamox have any sugar in it?

Only the medical ingredients are listed on the package. I have tasted a drop of this stuff, and it is super sweet.

This presents a potential problem, as I have a hypoglycemic ferret. I have been giving her this antibiotic since last Sunday, with relatively no problems, except for the fact that she hates the taste and wants to vomit right after (poor thing), so I have to quickly give her food right after I give her the medicine, so as to mask the taste (maybe I should just mix it right in with the food?.. I thought that it might alter it somehow though, so I hadn't done that).

Today, about an hour after giving her the medicine, she got a hypoglycemic attack - a really bad one. It took almost 2 hours for me to get her back to normal.. with syringe feeding her little by little sugar water, then some watery food mixture.

I don't know if this happened because of the medicine. I am worried about giving it to her again.. but she needs it because she has a bad infection inside her mouth, on the gum behind her back tooth. It seems to have come down a bit after giving her this for 5 days now.. (I'm worried that eventually the bacteria will become resistant to this medicine)

Her lymph glands and spleen have really swelled up recently.. ever since that infection has started. It probably started a while back, I just hadn't noticed it until recently when it became quite large and red.

When I took her to the emergency vet on Sunday, after the vet had poked her around and stuff, and stuffed a thermometer in her tush + gave her two injections (pain, sub-q liquids), she got another attack from all the stress. Really, the smallest amount of stress will do this to her, and she cannot handle car rides/trips to the vet. The vet already said she is not a surgical candidate.

Whatever I can do to help her, I can only do at home.

So does anyone know if there is sugar in Clavamox? And, the dosage that has been perscribed at the emergency vet clinic (they do not usually handle ferrets) is .25ml every 12 hours, for 10 days.

Is this enough? The swelling *seems* to have come down somewhat, but I thought after 5 days it would have made it go away more than that... maybe the dosage is too small?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.
