I'm not a vet but I am a long time pet owner. That sounds like something similar that would happen to my dog when she would lick the soap residue from the tub when we bathed her. Licking the water from the shower stall, especially if there is soap residue there, can make them sick. Because it is so sporadic it makes me think it's more of something he's getting into or eating and less of it being related to a long term illness.
