I'm wondering about ECE with the possible addition of asthma responding to seasonal pollen or perhaps inhalation, or ulcers secondary to illness irritating throat, or some vomit causing a secondary lung or traceal problem, but of course that is nothing more than a non-vet guess and as you point out the symptoms are such that there could be several possible causes.

What about an ultrasound? Might that be of help? Was blood work done or was the little one just too compromised at that point?

Obviously, you are doing the right things with careful vet care and lots of rehydration. Does your vet think that you should try treating for asthma at home, too? We used to with Ruffle and know others have since with more serious approaches than the basics used when Ruffie was around. (This info should be int the FHL archives at http://fhl.sonic-weasel.org and the FML archives at http://listserv.cuny.edu/archives/ferret-search.html )

I hope that there is a clear enough sign soon for you and your vet to better know which way to jump successfully. Best of luck to you.
