Subject: Please help, sacralfate or carafate?

My four year old ferret recently had her second adrenal surgery to remove her
right adrenal gland. She developed a discharge from her vulva so we put her
on amoxy. Now she isn't eating and is pawing at her mouth, so we thought she
may have developed an ulcer or helicobacter. Today we added sucralfate, after
reading in Dr. Purcell's Essentials of Ferrets. I also looked up the subject in
the book my vet and I received after attending the Veterinary Symposium we
went to a couple of summers ago. It seems the treatment may have changed even
since them. I'm wondering is sucralfate and carafate similar or the same thing?
Also, after reading yesterdays list, it seems we should add Biaxin, as this is
the latest approach to treating this problem. At this point I'm very confused.
My question is can I continue the sucralfate or switch to carafate? Lastly,
how long does it take for these meds to work so she will start eating again,
without being in pain? It's breaking my heart seeing her like this and having to
force her meds and food. Btw, I make Bob's Chicken Gravy, minus the bone to
feed them. I tried giving her turkey baby food but that's a no go. At least she
tries and eats some of the gravy, which I plan on offering her four times a
day, along with the sucralfate or carafate.

Lulu and I thank you in advance for your help,
Phyllis Taber
