Subject: how far to go with ECE`

Hi,

I adopted a lovely little female ferret about 3 months ago (about 1.5-2 years old) and introduced her and her littermate (also female) to an established home of 3 other female ferrets. Recently she has become ill, and I've taken her to the vet 3x. She is lethargic, has the characteristic "green slime" poo and has started vomiting after coming home from the vet.

After reading about ECE and talking to my vet, I'm fairly certain that's what she has (although my vet won't tell me that). I'm concerned she may not get better. To date, she's spent two nights at the vet on IV, received 0.03 Naxcel 1GM and is taking Clavamox Drops 15ml 2x a day. She is starting to now take a heartburn med to combat the vomiting.

She looks awful, has watery eyes and constantly tries to defecate with little success. I have been feeding her soft 'AD' food from my finger about 3x a day (my schedule doesn't allow more frequent feedings unfortunately) and getting her to drink or eat is a chore.

I'm concerned that she is suffering and I am prolonging that suffering and am curious to know if anyone has insight as to whether a note a ferret with these symptoms and this course of treatment has statistically gotten better.

Thanks,
Dan C
