With questionable coughing in ferrets it tends ot be smart to get chest x-rays. We've had one who one had a tiny cough one day but she was someone who never coughed. Besides, she held my big toe in her mouth that day and she did that ONLY when she was feeling sick and wanted help. To the ear she sounded fine. On chest x-rays (and then ultrasound) she had severe pneumonia and pleuresy. A chest x-ray will spot that in time and will spot the most common form of cardiomyopathy (which can also be a cause of coughing). Best case scenario is if it doesn't find anything serious wrong, but when there is something wrong it helps get the info needed to jump rapidly in the right direction.
