Subject: Aluminum Hydroxide in Pepto?

The triple meds for treatment of helicobacter are
Amoxil/ flagyl ( metrondiazole) and pepto or now
can be kaopectate because it is the bismuth that you
want ( both now have bismuth subsalicylate in them- just
check the label on the kaopectate if you use that one)
all three are given and take up to 4 - 6 weeks of treatment.

An easier combo is Biaxin and Amoxil for 2 or more weeks
but Biaxin is costly.

ECE treament is a lot of supportive care. Intially can
give amoxil to help with secondary bacterial infections
and prednisilone to help with inflammatory response.
Lot of hand feedings if not eating well, bland diet
like a/d or meat baby food, bob church's chicken gravy.
Sub Q fluids sometimes are needed when diarrhea is not
getting better, or in the beginning with nausea and not eating.

Some go through a wasing period before they completely recover,
and do get nausea, stomach ulcers. Ulcers don't have
to be helicobacter caused, can just be stress related.
Carafate 10 min before meals and the bland diet do help
with that.

IF helicobacter is really suspected, then the meds I spoke
of in the first paragraph apply.

There is no blood test for helicobacter or ECE, but if the
ferret is not doing well, and especially if older.
A CBC and electrolytes do help assess the situation,
looking for anemia and kidney function and a glucose level.
Perhaps the vet is trying to keep costs down for you? If the
ferret is really looking well, good weight and not over 4 then
blood work may not be needed? It is hard to say, sometimes ferrets
are hard to draw blood on, so a vet not real comfortable with
doing that may be more hesitant to do labs?

Good luck,

Patty

Hi,
This is a follow-on post to some of my earlier posts last week (ECE, 'chomping'). Turns out now the doctor has her on Amoxidrops (50mg/15ml) @ 0.12cc 2x a day and Metronidazole (125mg/ml) @ 0.1cc 2x a day. She also wanted us to give our little one Pepto with 80mg/ml Aluminum Hydroxide (@ 0.13ml every 12 hours). I've looked at every bottle of Pepto I could find but didnt see this listed as an ingredient. Am I missing something?

Something that alarms me is that the vet has never taken blood from our ferret. Is this normal? I can't help but think she doesn't have a clear idea of what's going on.

Thanks,
Dan
