I have a ferret, Charlie, that has a cough that triggers off and on. I took
him in to my vet and we did an x-ray. Found out that the trachea near the
lungs is wider than normal. This 'strectched out' area will close up
similar to a piece of balloon and cause coughing to get the airway cleared
open again. My vet prescribed Butorphanol (sp?) to help relax him. He only
needs it occasionally when he has a rough night -- he sometimes coughs until
he throws up.
