I see them struggle even with the small mask once they get a whiff of the gas. If this is for euthanasia, I prefer the vet give them a very heavy tranquilizer dose sub-q to allow them to slowly drift off then when fully under, give the final injection. This gives time to say your goodbyes and seems the least stressful to them.
