Subject: ferret with lymphoma and now hyperglycemia
Message-ID: <6125458.1086233900968.JavaMail.root@thallium.smartgroups.com>
Help please. My approximately 5 yr old female ferret, Casey, has been diag=
nosed with lymphoma and we were treating her with Leukeran, 2 pills/week an=
d .8ml pred per day. This treatment started about a month ago. After being =
on this for one week her CBC was checked and was ok. Two weeks after that C=
BC was checked and her findings were skewed, most notably her WBC which was=
in the 3. range, down from the mid 6s. Stopped both meds for one week. Rec=
hecked her CBC last Fri and her WBC was at 7 so restarted the meds. She had=
one Leukeran on Fri and started the daily .8 ml of pred. Over the weekend =
I noticed she wasn't herself. She had vomited in her cage on Sat, but she c=
ontinued to eat and drink etc ok. On Mon she just didn't seem quite right t=
hought perhaps upset tummy, called the vet to see if I could give Pepcid, s=
he said ok and not give Leukeran that night, give pred only if she didn't p=
erk up, she didn't, so gave pred. Took her in yesterday for fluids(a little=
dehydrated) and checkup. Vet kept her to give fluids, ran CBC which was st=
ill ok, decided on chemistries and her glucose was 700+. Urine also showed =
glucose and ketones. During the day she was given fluids, insulin, an ultra=
sound which didn't find anything specific, a small nodule on the pancreas b=
ut not definitive. Casey is bilateral adrenal and some nodules removed from=
pancreas last summer, no further problems with that. Glucose ran 2 more ti=
mes yesterday and only came down to, I can't quite remember, 300-400. Today=
she went back to vet, glucose checked and back up, exact figure I can't re=
member, but high. Insulin given again this morning, 1 unit. Vet also prescr=
ibed insulin for me to give at home which I did this evening. Glucose on th=
e urine strip was the top one, 2000. She is eating duck or turkey baby food=
, hasn't shown an interest in her kibble, isn't drinking a lot. My question=
, diabetes? reaction to pred? chemo drug? and if we get the glucose under c=
ontrol any other options to treat the lymphoma?
Thanks for any input, I realize there aren't many if any options out there =
but have to ask.
