Sounds like perhaps hidden lymphoma/lyphosarcoma which then suddenly caused a chest growth and took off.

That happened to our Jumpstart. For months EVERYONE knew something wasn't right. In his case the one thing missed which might have spotted it was a marrow aspiration. Shortly before he began crashing suddenly he'd had full body unltrasounds (AGAIN) with nothing showing. That day (suddenly having trouble breathing and suddenly having a huge bruise which was increasing in size in real time) he had a chest tumor and he was having ever worsening ascites which they kept treating harder and harder. The ascites and the tumor size were changing in real time -- hours only and the change was very noticible in his sequential images over just a something like 4 hours -- on that final day and we chose a mercy shot that day. All this crashing in a little guy whowas "off" and who hadn't shown anything diagnostic for months in so many tests...

This is very rare thing to run into so know that a vet or ferret person would not think automatically of this at first.
