I hate to, but I have to agree with Sukie on the possibility of
lymphoma. (It's not the agreeing with Sukie part I hate, it's the
lymphoma part.)

The mid-chest (Lynn, was it "mediastinal"?) growth is characteristic
of some forms of lymphoma, particularly lymphoblastic lymphosarcoma.
LB-LSA strikes mostly juveniles, but the mediastinal growth isn't
exclusive to that form. And yes, LSA can be extremely fast and
aggressive when it wants to be. It's entirely possible Cody didn't
have that growth a few weeks ago.

We just lost Guinevere who went in to have a massive spleen removed.
(She actually died from an apparent pulmonary embolism upon anesthetic
induction.) She seems to have had a slower lymphoma as well, and at
this point I have to wonder if the lymphoma entering an aggressive
phase is somehow implicated in the sudden splenomegaly, just like
you've seen with Cody. We also lost another last year with a similar
progression - sudden massive splenomegaly followed by a splenectomy,
followed by a rapid decline due to a previously unnoticed lymphoma
(bone-marrow-centric in this case).

It's a tiny sample and extremely unscientific, but it strikes me as
more than coincidence that we've seen two of ours have these sudden
massive spleens accompanying signs of aggressive lymphoma, and then
your Cody seems to be progressing similarly. I would be very worried
about him having lymphoma. (Pathology on the spleens did NOT indicate
lymphoma in the spleen by the way.)

And Lynn, you're absolutely right. We know our ferrets best. We're
the ones who spend all the time with you. A vet may know about
ferrets, but they don't know *your* ferrets. If you think there's
something wrong, insist on finding out why. That's why I like for my
ferrets to see their vets frequently when they're healthy, and why I
highly prize vets (and doctors for that matter) who take the time and
the concern to actually *listen* to you and discuss things with you
rather than merely dictating their "knowledge" at you. I have a
couple of those around here, and I would heartily encourage anyone who
doesn't have such a vet to find one.
