We have a blind dark-eyed white. He was about 6 when he started to lose his sight. He also noses the air. It took awhile to realize he was losing his sight since he gets around so well. Now he just occasionally runs into a foot or something left in his way. He is the sweetest boy but he startles easily unless I let him know I'm coming. Unfortunately he has developed masses in his neck and groin area. He is 8 years old now, so it's hard to tell if the tumors or age will take him first. It would be interesting to study the causes and tendencies toward blindness.

I've met blind ferrets before and I never realized that they were blind.
They used smell and other senses I guess to guide them. He startles very easily,
even at my hand touching his head ... unless I make sounds for him to hear me.
He actually noses in the air and "acts" very blind. But this is all not
typical from what I hear from others. Maybe others have ferrets who have always
been blind, I dont know. I'd sure be intersted in this behavioral as well as
health topic as well.
Can black eyed whites be more apt to acquire blindness and what can make
a ferret blind.
