Subject: not eating

I have a 3year old male ferret who has stopped eating. I force fed him for a week and then he started eating again on his own but now he has stopped eating again. I am not sure what is wrong with him. He is very weak and has lost alot of weight. I dont have to money to take him to a vet cuz they concider him to be exotic and charge way too much. they also dont specialize in ferrets and would be guessing their diagnois. I would appreciate any input.
