I need some info for my vet, preferably from other vets. Any info I found on combining Diazoxide with Prednisone said to lower the pred.
My ferret was on .2ml of prednisolone twice a day and the vet started him on .1ml of diazoxide twice a day along with it. After starting on the combo about an hour or so after he got his meds he acted as though his blood sugar was fairly low. We tested him with a home glucometer (which compared to the vets machine is fairly accurate) and it was 55 (adding 20 as per vets suggestion). At that time he had food, because we were trying to get him out of that state. It took about half a day to get him back to normal.
Next day, same thing so we stopped the diazoxide.
Next day we took his BG around the same time, this time starving BG and it was 54, pretty close. The vet said the pred didn't need to be lowered, his BG should be to high if the dose is off. He primarily eats duck soup and some Zupreem kibble. He is getting very little carbs and no sugars (or trace amounts). I know if a diabetic gets no insulin they become hyperglycemic, but Tibbie's body has no sugar or very little in it. I just need info for the vet if anyone can help. Any links to sites about dosing and lowering pred as protocol when adding diazoxide? Any vets that can help me out? Anything would be great, thanks a lot!
