Subject: Hilbert: bilateral swollen and infected kidneys, removed fetal bladder portion, stones

His kidney values worsened today.

On his second ultrasound his hydroneprosis is somewhat reduced, though.
He showed up two very tiny stones which didn't come out at surgery
with the rest. They'd hidden themselves from the spoon.

He's home because he keeps removing catheters. Within two minutes of
being home and out of our arms he'd done the same thing for us, even
before we could get his pump hooked up. and was bleeding as a result
but we got through the tape and staunched that. So, he is on oral and
sub-cu fluids with a 170 ml goal each day because of his kidney needs
(normal is about 100) and we have to keep him urinating. If that stops
he may be blocked again; with a blockage he has an increased chance of
bladder rupture given the surgery to remove that pouch created when he
didn't lose the fetal attachment to the umbilicus properly.

He may still need a PU, in which case we'll likely be running to a very
high tech major medical center for animals for that on an emergency
basis.

On Monday his kidney levels get run again.

HIs white call count is high which is no surprise given his hard-to-hit
infection.

We have the subcu fluid with surfactants and salts to help his tissues
retain more fluid, and a dex solution and know to cut that half and
half if it needs to be used.

We're on 24 hour shifts again and we'll move a cot out to the front
room near his sick cage to be safest, too.

Many meds. I have to make up a chart for those two. Already have his
fluid chart going.

Between his needs and Sherman's approximately 24 meds a day (which are
working for his problems) we won't be doing much beyond our own family
needs for a few days, I think. When I get a break a break I'll try to
fit in some other stuff.

Has anyone else run into a ferret who retained this fetal structure as
a pouch and as a result had pooling urine there create stones? Any
info you can share?

We're still awaiting some of his tests.
