A biopsy or just a fine needle aspirate of the mass can give some
clues to it's origin. This should not involve hitting any nerves
or vital vessels. If your vet is not real comfortable with ferrets,
look for one that is. Where are you from? Maybe someone can refer
you to a vet? Or, ask your vet to try to get a sample of the growth
for pathology. A blood test may help a little, a CBC and a Chest Xray also may help in figuring out if there is anything else going on.

Your ferrets age, and the location of the growth may also help others here give you advise. SIde of neck, front or back, etc.
Also, what treatment are you refering to.

I have a sick fellow named Scratch. I've taken him to our ferret vet already but they are unsure of what it is. Lymphoma was a guess but with treatment the growth has not gone down. Our vet doesn't want to operate in the neck area due to nerves and other items in the area. The growth is getting bigger but he is still playful. In my heart I know it's not lymphoma but some other growth.
