Subject: rer: Hole in roof of mouth---Help!

An experience that I recently had was that one of our ferrets acted like
he was ill for about two days. He had in fact stopped eating except for soupy
baby food. Up behind his front incissors was a tiny sore that was deep ...
like a hole. I had indeed found out that the cause was not an ulcer, cancer,
or anything I had expected but was a nasty sting by a rather large hornet that
got into their room. One just never knows. Now although that prevented other
ferrets from suffering the same thing (as we found out others started getting
in), it really did not help our ferret. By the time we discovered the hole,
let alone what the cause was, the illness part, etc had passed.
I guess my point is to think outside the box as much as you can, but do
not let it consume your energy. I put far too much energy into trying to figure
out cause I think. Our ferret did recoup, slowly, but nicely. I know it's a
bugger when these things occur on weekends when your regular vet is not
around. You're doing the right thing by keeping your ferret hydrated and on a
soupy bland diet that does not hurt his mouth. Carafate helps indeed (the
coating). Let us know after you've been to the vet what treatment options you take,
what helps, what doesn't, as well as if you ever discover the cause. I know
I've not been the only one to come here in the past in a frenzy trying to
figure out a "hole" in my ferrets mouth. With our ferret, he nearly crashed one
night. My son thought he was going to bury him. It's amazing how something so
little can nearly take their lives, so be careful.
