I had a similar problem with my Rocky wanting to eat the dog food. Fortunately he also ate his own food, he just preferred dog food. To keep him out of the dog food, I raised the dog food bowl about one foot. This would work for a medium to large dog. Our medium dog is a female chow/lab mix, about 40 lbs, she has no trouble eating from the raised bowl. You can buy dog food bowls built into storage containers or tables, or you could try it by just putting the bowl on a box.
