From a more than casual observance of behaviors - I will tell you indeed
the pitch of the squeaks will trigger a nurturing - otective response from
female ferrets. I had litters in the past it is that protective instinct
that the squeak does stimulate!

There are some ferrets who will respond with interest to squeaks while some
respond fiercely to the noise. IMO those who respond with a more
protective nature are those who will appear to be distressed rather than
interested in the noise!.
