I am researching one particular vet in my area. In his c.v. he has noted a
special interest in ferrets. Yet, even with a "special interest", he hasn't
mentioned anywhere that he has ever attended a single ferret-specific conference,
nor have I ever seen him on this list (while their are many vets I've seen
post to the list, are there any in NY?).

Tell me if I am wrong, but if the vet really did have an interest in ferrets,
wouldn't their be more ferret-related activities listed in his c.v.?

Not necessarily. Although I've attended several ferret-specific conferences,
I don't tend to list that in ads, etc, rather that I have a special interest
in the species. My advice would be to ask directly. If this vet has done
ferret-related continuing education, he will be happy to tell you that.

Pricing - that varies dramatically from area to area and from hospital to
hospital within an area. Ask them to explain their pricing schedule - for
example, does the estimate on a surgery include the bloodwork, biopsy, meds, etc, or
are those priced separately and the estimate given for the surgery alone?
And yes, to some degree, you do indeed get what you pay for.
