We've run into both situations: vets who charge too much and deliver too little (Guess why we travel now...) and vets who are worth every dime they charge. Sometimes the higher costs reflect things like higher taxes and higher property costs, but sometimes they reflect paying night staff so over night patients are in better shape, keeping sleeping quarters at a hospital for vets for the same reason, having specialized equipment, etc.

So, no cost alone does not tell the entire story, but it is neither a recommendation nor anthing negative in and of itself from our experience.

Also, it can be hard to judge vets by the office staff. Usually office staff have been wonderful in more places we've used (Ditto vets.) BUT when we checked with one New Jersey specialty place to help with Hilbert the staff was horrible, literally going out of their way to make sure that he could not get treatment in time. Of course, that led to our vet thinking outside the box and saving his kidneys.
