Technically, it's not something that requires a prescription to obtain. Usually only vet clinics sell it, and I believe they call it a "prescription" diet because they don't want you feeding this regularly as a normal diet.
I've walked into clinics that I've never been to before and purchased A/D without a single question (or prescription).
