A year and a half is so young, please consider euthanasia a last resort. If
he has not shown a good improvement in 2 weeks, I would focus toward looking
for a cause. Sounds like he has a really bad infection. Have any x-rays
been done? With the teeth grinding, could he have a blockage bordering on
septic (diet or treats with fruit, toys he could have chewed parts to be
ingested, even cotton or sponge under furniture where he played)? Has any
of his blood/urine/fecal/mucous labs been cultured to identify the
viral/bacterial content? Is it possible you may be dealing with something
that is resistant to the medications used? Given your ferret perked up with
steroids, could this be a clue to something (although unlikely, maybe some
type of a cancer or tumor)?

I am throwing ideas out, and please know I am not a vet. Just trying to
help!
