Cost is not a good indicator of degree of care. I take my ferrets to the same clinic my parents took our dog to. (Our dog had some serious health problems before we put her to sleep.) I walked in (sans ferrets) and asked if they had any vets that had experience with ferrets. (If you walk in, they can't ignore you like they can a phone call.) The receptionist actually went and got the vet who does the "exotic" pets. I talked to him and he addmitted to having few experiences as a ferret vet but has owned ferrets since he was a child and would be willing to accept any information I could provide him with regarding the care of ferrets. He even went out and bought medical books on ferrets. Sometimes they don't charge me for things, taking into consideration I am a student. Last visit, they didn't charge me for the rabies shots or the deworming medication for both ferrets, only the office visit.
