We have every one of our ferrets chipped, and have never had a problem
with it. It can float around a little bit in the (very thin) fat pad
over their shoulders, but since those tissues don't move around the
body, the chip won't either unless you force it.
As notorious as ferrets are for getting outdoors and getting lost, I
recommend chipping them. You never know...it might get one of your
ferrets returned to you one day.
