A chest x-ray is ALWAYS a good idea when there is unusual coughing by a ferret.

Sometimes an ultrasound is also important, ditto some other tests depending on what things look like.

Need to check: lungs, heart, respiratory tract, rarely diaphram for irritation/mechanical problems/neuro, and stomach and esophagus should be checked for things like blockage, reflux, or for another problem which may cause the trachea to swell just from neighboring irritation.

Those are all that I can think of offhand, except maybe for asthma. We had one with that years ago.

I'd sure get that chest x-ray as a first step.

I'm not a vet, but have encountered a lot of things in 23 years with ferrets (and still learning all the time).
