That is an excellent question. I seem to recall that there are two
competing systems, and Europe may have others I'm not aware of.

The system that is the most common in the US is the Avid system. If
the Avid scanner can pull an ID number from the chip, it really won't
matter who made it. In any case, you'll want to make sure Avid (or
the other chip registrar, if it's not Avid-compatible) has your
information and not somebody else's. There is a small per-pet fee for
registering with Avid...I forget exactly, but I think it's something
like $15 per pet, or $40 for up to 8 pets.
