Cardiac, adrenal, insulinoma, etc all could also cause problems. The
lesions in the vertebrae may contribute but you are right and should rule
out the other causes so if there is something you could take care of it
sooner. Tell your vet you understand the cost involved but it would make
you feel better to check for other problems. Also did the vet eval the
heart, the kidney size and look for any enlargements? Good Luck.
