Microchips are very bio-friendly! I just wrote an entire article for our
local humane shelter newsletter on the topic, after an extended period of
research. The chip is only about the size of a grain of rice, injected
through a syringe in a procedure not much different than a typical
injection. It only emits radio waves when scanned by the receiver.

I have seen a minimal tissue build up around the implant before, but nothing
harmful. The best example I can provide if how a pierced earlobe feels
differently than the rest of the ear - only deeper and with a grain of rice
in the animal. The implants always go in the shoulder, right below the
scruff of the neck.

The two major brands in the US are the Home Again and Avid manufacturers.
All the humane societies in my area scan every intake (cats, dogs, birds,
ferrets, etc.) in hopes of uniting lost pets with their family.

Hope this helps.
