My ferret had adrenal surgery on Tuesday after he showed signs of urinary difficulty. He was only missing a very small amount of hair (top of his head). I was told by the vet that she removed all of left and part of the right adrenal. Based on that, she suggested he would not need hormone replacement. Evidence of urinary infection was found in a urine sample, so he was put on clavamox.
Biopsy came back Cordical Adenoma (with a note that said neoplastic cells isolated with the capsule).
He took nearly 24 hours to fully come around from his anethesia, but did not get his appetite back. He would lick soup from a spoon, but would not eat on his own.
On Saturday, I woke to find him straining and unable to urinate. Back under the gas he went to be cathaterized. Dislodging a "mucus plug" enabled him to urinate properly, but again he had difficultly waking up.
He has been weak and lethargic ever since. He will not eat. I FORCE feed him soup every 4 hours and sometimes he vomits. Yesterday I took him back for fluids and his vet gave me some sulcrulfate for his stomach. He is now grinding his teeth and making little groaning noises. His poops look normal and he has not had a problem peeing since his incident Saturday.
Before the surgery, he was looking healthy and happy and had no signs of ill heath other than the sudden difficulty urinating.
He is 5 1/2 years old.
I am desparate for ideas and open to any suggestions and ideas. Please help.
