Subject: DIC 3 weeks post-op?

Does anyone know if DIC can develop 3 weeks post-op? I searched the archives, most reports of DIC came on within hours of surgery, not 3 weeks later.

My Harley had emergency surgery for an intestinal blockage on 6/30. A few days ago I noticed the edges of the incision scar were pale blue, as if slightly bruised. This evening I noticed most of his belly is now pale blue. It is not a dark bruising, but does cover most of his belly.

I called his Vet at home, she was concerned it may be DIC, so she had me check his gums, which are pink, and press on them to see how long it took for them to turn pink again. Less than 2 seconds. She thinks everything is fine, but suggested I send her pictures via email, which I have done. She is 2.5 hours away, so we can't make a quick trip in to have it checked out.

He ate well this morning, and played. I work during the day, so I don't know when he ate last, but at 7:45 pm he woke to poop (a little soft, but no evidence of blood) and play for a little bit. This was when I noticed his belly.

Anyone seen DIC not immediately after surgery? Any other ideas? (bruising from surgery just now getting to the skin surface?)

Thanks,
Kim and Harley
