Many cough drops are only sugar; when there is more then it pays to ask an expert or look on an animal poisoning site to check each content in the ingredient label.

Here is a resource which is always good to have handy when scares happen:

http://www.napcc.aspca.org/ ASPCA National Poison Control Center

which does allow a person to look some things up and also has a pay-per-use call-in service:

http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=apcc_phonenumber

The cost includes a lot of follow-up service and sometimes the product is covered and you wont be charged. (There are products which have been so hurt by false rumors of animal injuries or deaths that their manufacturers pay for additional testing to prove their safety and then cover the cost of anyone who needs that info from the ASPCA National Poison Control Center.)

BTW, there is a free magnet with their info available from the site. Stick it on your fridge!

Either before this resource existed or at least before we knew of it we once had to call a manufacturer using the company contact info on a cleaning product (which turned out to be safe; it was the bit of sponge causing a problem for her). That was something over 20 years ago when a ferret showed us how much ferret proofing doesn't always work. The manufacturer was extremely helpful and all worked out fine, so that is also an option at times.

I just figured that this is info which everyone should have on hand because of when it is needed rapidly, so it doesn't hurt any to repeat it.
