I don't think it matters one way or the other if it is crushed or not, what
is imperative is that the pills will not dissolve in anything but water. If
you try to dissolve in ferret tone or ferret vit you destroy the pill all
the time. I guess it is just a preference or experience that allows you to
choose which way you do it.
