Subject: Proheart6 - recall? dog deaths?

I spoke to my local vet about the study using Proheart6 to treat heartworms in
ferrets. She told me there was controversy concerning using the product in dogs
(reactions including deaths), and that she had pulled it from her stock.
I did some research and found the following links to be very interesting. Apparently
there is a recall on certain lots (you'll have to search through the list on the FDA
page at the first link listed below), but I'm not sure whether the dangers only apply
to dogs, or might apply to ferrets also.

What are your thoughts?

[Co-Moderator's notes:
1. We do not know if any ferrets have reacted, so that needs to be checked. They
may not have a problem with it.
2. We apparently do not know the rate of dogs who have reacted; it may be small or
even very small for all we know at this point.
3. We apparently do not know for sure if there was a temporary problem with
batches which was cleared up.
Point being: read about this, know about it, but don't panic or assume the worst.
Instead listen while we all learn from the experts over time, and go by what your
own vet wants to do. It is very easy to use something else for heartworm
prevention, while knowing that this med may still remain the safest way to treat an
existing adult heartworm infestation of the heart, given that the worms are fatal and
previous approaches still had half dying. -- SDC]
