We've encountered moth sores secondary to 2 things:
kidney disease
a hard to treat ascending GI infection which required a mix of antibiotics and other meds

Although it sounds like a minor thing this trick our vet taught us really helped each time to reduce both the sores and their discomfort. He had use use plain Listerine on a cotton swab on the sores. I don't know how much of the salutatory effect was due to other ingredients and how much was based on the alcohol in it (Alcohol is sometimes used for mouth sores in humans, too, when other options aren't there.) but it helped our guys surprisingly well.

Can you call your vet for a call-back to ask about this or other options?
