The Ferret Business of GA took in the Morehouse College 17 reseach ferrets recently. A good deed came out of the selter doing a good deed. We got their protocol for eradicating the Helicobacter mustelae in Ferrets. The Professor was so relieved that we took the ferret in, that she gave us their protocol to help other ferrets. Her letter (with her permission) is below.

Dear Juliana,

Again, thank you for looking after my ferrets. You have made me sleep much easier at night knowing that they are being looked after and will have a good life.

The following is the protocol we used to eradicate Helicobacter mustelae from our animals. The animals were monitored 4 times a year by PCR for H. mustelae and were negative for all tests.

The 3 drugs we used were:

1) omeprazole (Prilosec) - 2 mg/kg/dose given twice a day - 1, 20mg capsule was mixed with 5 ml of applesauce and 0.5 ml (cc) given twice a day.

2) amoxicillin - 40 mg/kg/dose three times a day - mixed as directed with water and 0.5 ml (cc) given three times a day. This has a cherry flavor and the ferrets took this alone without mixing with juice.

3) clarithromycin - 15 mg/kg/dose three times a day - 0.85 ml (cc) clarisuspension mixed with 6 ml (cc) of apple juice and 0.5 ml (cc) given 3 times a day. Note - the clarithromycin comes as a suspension, but the ferrets preferred the drug mixed with apple juice.

We dosed our animals for 2 weeks using this regimen. This was a standard regimen used for humans, we adjusted the dosage for the ferrets weight.

Hope this helps. If you or anyone else have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

FERRET BUSINESS of GA was contacted by the Morehouse School of Medicine -
Center for Laboratory Animal Resources as a resource for rehoming 17 ferrets. These ferrets were part of a breeding program, all bred at this facility, from Triple F breeding stock. This program lost its funding & had to find a reputable organization/person or people to place this business. The 17 unaltered, unvaccinated, ferrets that are petrified, because everything they've known all their lives is gone - Morehouse 17 - have been transferred to FBoG.

In preparation for helicobactor pylori research, these ferrets were maintained Helicobacter mustelae free. Dr. Newman has graciously provided us w/the protocol she used.
