What about genetic syndromes which cause hyperkeratosis or ichthyosis just as a possibility in the back of your mind? Among humans some of these medical disorders are very rare and hard to have the right combination. Were the parents related? In skimming it looks like these individuals (when it happens among humans) usually show some other skin signs at birth but not always. You might want to do a Google search just to get a feeling for the range and types in case.
