One of my girls used to poof in her sleep, and I just thought it was 'normal
for her' Maybe it was at that time, but now several years along, she hasn't
done it for months.
I didn't pay much attention to the fact that she'd stopped doing it, and
suddenly she lost a lot of weight and became very lethargic. Blood tests
showed that she was probably harbouring an infection, but we had no idea
where.
I happened to mention to the vet that her anal glands seemed quite full and
the vet expressed them. What came out did look a little thicker than
normal, so the vet prescribed an antibiotic for a week, in case there was
some infection there.

Several weeks later she was back at the vets with impacted anal glands. The
vet found it difficult to express them and what came out was extremely
strong smelling and brown. she's on an antibiotic (Synulox palitable drops)
and Metacam for the swelling for a month now, in the hope that the
infection clears. We are almost 3 weeks in to the course, and what little
is coming out is still thick and brown. This means that we may have to
consider removal if this doesn't work. Not an easy decision, as she's
around 6/7 years old. The vet said that another possibility is 'flushing'
the glands, but there's a fair chance that this won't work.
