Hi There,

I had an other shelter lady mail me, that back in 2000 they have what sound like this hit their shelter. Animals were dropping like flies before you realize they were sick they were gone. She said that they found it was an airborne salmonella that affected both animals and the humans in the shelter. They found it to be cause be the turtles they had recently rescued. She sent me the vet's contact info who worked on this and the treatment they used to save what was left of the sick ones. Every thing this other shelter described to the shelter I know is the same. They got some of antibiotics and started them on the same treatment as the other shelter used. I took all the info I got here from every one to them and the vet they have is going to get on this first thing today to contact who ever needs to be involve to find out what this is.

As of this morning the animals they moved to a new home none are showing any signs of being ill. The ill ones they left at the shelter 2 may not make it they are still deathly ill. They are thinking of using them for tissue samples. The others are holding their own so far, the humans are starting to feel better they say what they felt like was having a stomach flu or like they had eaten some thing bad. I do not know yet how the girl's pet rat is it is to early to call her.

The shelter was told to get rid of the turtles and birds and to strip the place down from top to bottom disinfect every inch before bring in an other animal and to be careful of any humans that visit the home until this is done some people and animals are more susceptible then others to picking this up. Has any one ever heard of that? I was there Fri and Sat never touched the turtle but was around them I feel fine so far.

Do want to say thanks to all that has sent all the info to hopefully find out what this is. They found a home for the birds and I said I would check the Internet to see if I can fine a turtle rescue for them to call. The birds and turtles are all fine this seem to have no affect at all on them.

It was mentioned that there are turtles present. What kind? Are they treated by a knowledgable vet? I know that the marine mammals we work with can carry diseases that can make humans very ill. Is it possible that the turtles may also have something they are transmitting?

As others have said, speculation is pointless without some proof. Hope all turns out okay. BTW, did they learn what it was in 2000?

Animals that are not in contact with a sick one can get it. Mortality is 100% so for in the animals. Helpers are going to move all of the healthy ones to a new home to see if it can stop the spread but will this help.
> Blood work and things have been run on sick and non sick animals and not a thing show up difference in the blood, no fever in any sick ones all are up to date on all of the shots the ferrets are all ADV - and the cats are FIP -. They know it is not distemper, feline aids or ferret ADV no one has a clue of what they are dealing with. Does any one here have any ideas? The only thing so far that it does not affect is the birds in the rescue.
